Looking for an Easter activity to show that you are thinking of someone special to you? You needn’t look any further than sending a message in an egg! For Easter this year we took our decorated Easter Eggs and put a message inside. This was fun for the kids in the fact my oldest helped me hollow out the eggs, they all got to decorate eggs, they all practiced their handwriting by writing a message to put in the eggs, and they just loved the fun of having a message in an egg!
The very first step in sending a message in an egg is to hollow it out. I wrote a separate article with the steps on how to hollow out an egg. If you would like to follow these instructions, please click here.

The next step would be to decorate the eggs. Many people have different preferences on how to decorate the eggs. What we did this year can be found by following this link. I always prefer decorating real eggshells; because their texture and consistency is much easier to color as you wish. Once you are done decorating the eggs is when you write the note.
When writing the note to put in the egg there are a few things to consider:

- Make the paper about 2” x 2”. If the paper is too long it will push through the other side, or just stick out the bottom.
- You will have to roll the paper tightly to fit in the hole of the egg.
- Do not put the note in the egg when the dye is still wet or it will dye the note as well.
- Watch the pressure you apply to the egg as you insert the note. If too much pressure is put on the outside of the egg it will crush.
- You can always make the hole slightly bigger if needed, but I would recommend using a pin to do so instead of just forcing the paper in.

The very last steps are mainly cosmetic, but we found cute little one-dollar boxes at Walmart to put them in. For stuffing, I used shredded paper. Then I put a note “Break Me!” inside the lid of the box. At that point, they were ready to be gifted.
